"The Founding of
Hobart" by Frank Bolt
A
diary of events from September 1803 to August 1804, leading up to the
settlement of Hobart town
The Hope and Anchor Tavern
also rates a mention in the recently published book "The Founding of
Hobart" by Frank Bolt. In the back of this fabulous book, that
retails for around $49.95, Frank
has compiled a fascinating map which is an over lay of the original
shoreline around Sullivans Cove on top of the street map of today's
Hobart.
It looks like a sandy beach
followed the line of the shore from Argyle Street to the corner of Market
Place (site of the Hope and Anchor) and there the Hobart rivulet, was
navigable by dinghies, thence east to Park Street rivulet, which was about
opposite the end of Evans Street where the Woolstore Apartment Motel is
now. Then it turned Southward and became a sandy spit, later, the causeway
linking Hunter Island with the Early settlement. The book can be purchased
at many Tasmanian book shops, but if you have trouble getting a copy,
contact me, and I shall make the necessary arrangement so that you'll get
it. With only 2000 printed, it may become quite collectible, as have
previous books by the same author.
